GOOD COMPANIONS

Our April meeting, held as usual on the fourth Thursday of the month, at 2.30 p.m. was quite special. After our Chairman Madge Stock gave usual announcements and details of coming events, she introduced Janet and John, representatives of the Deaf Awareness organisation.   John is almost completely deaf but notwithstanding this disability gave us a very enlightening talk on the difficulties, and triumphs he encounters in his daily, and working, life.

Despite the occasional "Chinese Whispers" John gave us examples of how those who hear well are able to help deaf people. Apart from those people who are born deaf or who lose hearing through injury or illness, the incidence of age hearing loss is 1 person in? by the age of 60 rising to 1 in 5 over the age of 70. Janet gave details of help that can be given in the form of a Deaf Services team that operates under the auspices of Surrey County Council and the R.S.C. Hospital via a specially-equipped Mobile Advisory Service. This Van will be next in attendance at the hospital on Thursday 28th May, being parked outside the entrance to the Eye and Audiology clinics between 1-3 p.m.

The afternoon tea was enjoyed, and many members asked Janet and John further questions about their work, Next months meeting will be on 28th May when we will have a Bring and Buy Sale (please remember to price your articles!)
