ELSTEAD LEGION 60 YEARS CELEBRATION REPORT.

There was sunshine all day for the 60 years celebration on Saturday 23rd of May. It commenced at 11.30 am with Mr Whittaker the Club President being introduced to some of the oldest village residents who had been present at the ceremony in 1949 when the building was handed over the Legion Branch.

Mr Whittaker was then handed the original key and unlocked the Front Door to the Building prior to the day's activities commencing.

There was an excellent Tombola and the Bouncy Castle at the rear of the garden was popular with the children. A collection of Branch and other historic artefacts was on show. In addition to the Bar refreshments included a BBQ and teas. There was an excellent Raffle with many valuable prizes a Balloon Race and a Bowls competition between with the Branch and other local teams.

A number of new members were recruited for the Branch.

Elstead Royal British Legion, Club General Meeting

This meeting was held to bring members up to date with the financial progress made since the Emergency meeting held on 22nd of August 2008. Doug Moore presented the interim balance sheet which showed that the clubs financial position was moving in a positive direction. This is due both to the work done by volunteers and by more people using the facilities.

There remain a number of maintenance jobs to be done, some of which must be undertaken by suitably qualified people.

It was agreed that the volunteers deserved a vote of thanks for the many hours they have put in to the running of the club.

ELSTEAD AFTERNOON W.I

Over 70 people attended the Village Hall for the June meeting and President, Betty Moxon welcomed 6 guests.

The 2 fund-raising events - an Afternoon Tea and a Coffee Morning were very successful and there will be a further Coffee Morning in July.  An outing to Chichester, followed by a boat trip around the Harbour is planned for August.

Betty then reported on the National WI AGM which she attended at the Albert Hall.   Maureen Lipman was a very amusing speaker in the morning, followed by Eve Pollard (a former tabloid editor) and Jonathon Wild from Yorkshire Tea, both of whom were very interesting.  The Resolution "SOS" for Honeybees was passed with 99.4% in favour.

The speaker for the afternoon was Heather Symes and her talk was entitled "Hop Skip & Jump along the Pilgrim's Way".  Heather gave a very interesting and amusing talk, accompanied by slides, illustrating the historic route taken by the pilgrims from Winchester to the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury.  The actual route took in the ancient main streets of Farnham, Guildford, Dorking, Reigate and quite a few of the outlying villages of Compton, Shere, Gomshall, and many more.

The competition "A small item of religious memorabilia" was won by Pat Hertzig.

The next meeting will be a Cream Tea in a member's garden on 2nd July.
