'And
now for something completely different'! Without losing
a single car load, we set off for Hamptons Estate via the
Cuttmill entrance, where we were warmly welcomed by Mr.
and Mrs Liddell and their staff and dogs.
Mr Liddell gave us a most succinct resume of the commercial
aspects of the estate from which they gained a living.
Some fields are leased for salad crops etc. and the land
surrounding the house welcomes film units. (We passed 'Nottingham'
as we left in the dusk). However the majority of their
income is from forestry, hops, beef and game, the latter
two of which they sell monthly from the farm. (more
at www.hamptonestate.co.uk Ed)
From thence we scattered to all areas of the beautiful garden,
taking in green houses, orchard, walled and mainly vegetable
and fruit caged garden, to rose bedecked swimming pool 'temple'
and the amazingly wide and colourful long border.
Finally we were regally regaled with drinks before happily
trailing away to the Seale exit. A lovely friendly,
sociable evening.
Next meeting 10th August 2009 when Mr Buller
will give a talk on Chrysanthemums
