NEWS FROM ELSTEAD PARISH COUNCIL

We have now received the response from SCC Highways to the petition to get either a crossing or an island in Milford Rd. Councillor Anne Thomas has given the reply in full in a separate article. We are disappointed that Highways cannot fund any improvements here in the current year but the Parish Council will be keeping the pressure on for action next year.
In the meantime we have persuaded Highways to add the 30 mph limit signs to the new gateways and with the addition of new road markings.

All the financial support for the new allotments has been agreed and we are pressing ahead with the contractors to get the work done. Everyone has been very patient but the Council has to go through the correct legal tendering procedures for all major expenditures.

The Council has agreed the draft lease for Elstead Football club to use and maintain the Burford Lodge Rec Ground Pavilion.

We have received proposals by Waverley BC planning department to transmit all planning documents to Parish Councils by electronic methods only.  We have decided to oppose the idea as it is in  our view completely impractical - nine councillors trying to view plans on a laptop computer screen would be difficult to manage.

As a result of continual pressure on Waverley Road Cleaning Department, Thursley Rd was cleaned extensively in July including a man with a spade to shift the worst of the dirt and weeds!  At our request this road will be cleaned monthly in future (not three monthly).

Date of next Council Meeting: 21st September 2009

ELSTEAD ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WOMEN'S SECTION

The Members at the Meeting on the 13th August, was entertained by Jo Young who designed quite a number of lovely flower arrangements, using many background leaves easily obtainable from garden or hedgerow, and gave many tips and instructions on how to keep the flowers fresh and achieve good results. She is well qualified to do this as she won a Gold Medal at Chelsea Flower Show 4 years ago. The arrangements were, as usual, raffled off at the end of the afternoon

The Meeting on September 10th takes the form of a Beetle Drive, so come along and try your luck ladies.

CAN YOU HELP
FREDERICK HOWARD ELSTEAD - 1914-1918 WAR

I am a volunteer at Godalming Museum and have been asked to research a Certificate 'Presented by the Inhabitants of Elstead to Frederick Howard  in recognition of valuable services rendered during the Great War - 19th July  1919'.

Can anyone help with this and why it was presented and who was  Frederick.  Gillian Drew's book does not cover WWI.

Thanks in advance.
