ELSTEAD RBL POPPY APPEAL
LETTER TO RESIDENTS SEPTEMBER 2009

Grasshoppers Lower Ham Lane
Elstead
Surrey

Dear Resident

The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal raises funds to help the ex-service community lead a better quality of live. For the Poppy Appeal to continue this good work we in Elstead always need volunteers to collect house to house and a supermarkets. Can you five a couple of hours at Remembrance time? We ask you to join our team and make a real difference.

With the passing of Henry Allingham and Harry Patch the last living link has gone in the UK with the millions who fought in the great War. However there are thousands of ex-service people from World War Two to more modern conflicts such as Palestine, Malaya, Korea, Cyprus, Suez and Aden. Were involved in Northern Ireland and Kosovo, and our commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan still continue. All will need the help of the Poppy Appeal now and in the years to come.

If you already collect, thank you. If you feel that you can help us, please contact me at the above address or telephone number.

The poppy appeal runs from the 31st of October to the 7th November 2009.

CHRISTMAS HOSTS

Are you thinking about who might come for Christmas this year? Perhaps you would like to make it a bit different. Some of the adults from overseas who are currently studying at UK universities would love to spend a couple of days in a real home, rather than on a deserted campus. It is interesting to share Christmas with people for whom it is all quite new (many international students are from China, for example). HOST has been linking students with hospitable volunteers for 22 years, at Christmas and also one-off weekends throughout the year. HOST is a registered charity backed by the Foreign Office and many universities. It is not necessary for hosts to live near a university, as students are prepared to travel far for this unique experience!
